Identifying microclimate tree seedling refugia in post-wildfire landscapes

چکیده
High-severity wildfire in arid regions has caused ecological state change, transforming previously forested areas into shrublands. This dramatically alters the microclimatic conditions, which can exceed climatic tolerance of tree seedlings, rendering likelihood returning post-wildlife landscapes to their previous relatively low. Characterizing variability across severely burned could allow for identifying locations where seedling survival is more likely. We used a combination small unmanned aircraft system imagery, satellite data and in-situ microclimate recordings, together with machine learning approach, model monthly near-ground minimum, mean max temperature as well relative humidity vapor pressure deficit area, now dominated by two different shrub species. Spatially explicit models predicted recorded (r = 0.73 0.97), projections highlight that at any given location hottest month, solar buffering capacity existing vegetation alter maximum ∼12 °C, increase ∼20% reduced 0.3mbar open areas. By harnessing these refugia, success rate reforestation efforts post-wildfire be substantially increased mitigate seedlings from climate warming local scales.

Fire Effects on Historical Wildfire Refugia in Contemporary Wildfires
Wildfire refugia are forest patches that are minimally-impacted by fire and provide critical habitats for fire-sensitive species and seed sources for post-fire forest regeneration. Wildfire refugia are relatively understudied, particularly concerning the impacts of subsequent fires on existing refugia. We opportunistically re-visited 122 sites classified in 1994 for a prior fire refugia study, ...

change events (Alley et al. 2003). Thus, the persistence of the species as a whole also does not imply that all local populations, subject to rapid regional climate changes, were able to survive. The capacity of species to migrate in response to past climate change have been inferred from where and when species appear in the palaeoecological record (Davis 1981, Huntley and Birks 1983, Delcourt ...
متن کاملVegetation and wildfire controls on sediment yield in bedrock landscapes
[1] Steep, rocky landscapes commonly exhibit high sediment yields and are especially sensitive to climate, tectonics, and wildfire. Predicting landscape response to these perturbations demands a quantitative understanding of erosion processes. However, existing models for hillslope sediment production and transport do not apply to landscapes with patchy soil and slopes that exceed the angle for...

متن کاملEcosystem Post-Wildfire Effects of Thasos Island
Fires is one of the main types of disturbances that shape ecosystems in the Mediterranean region. However nowadays, climate alterations towards higher temperatures result on increased levels of fire intensity, frequency and spread as well as difficulties for natural regeneration to occur. Thasos Island is one of the Greek islands that has experienced those problems. Since 1984, a series of wild...
